Introduction to Jersey and Knitted Fabrics

Good quality Jersey fabrics are very forgiving and easy to work with; and will reward your time and effort with a great looking outfit that does not spoil at the first wash. They are also very easy to care for as they only need the coolest wash and little or no ironing, save on energy and dry cleaning bills.

Fabric Rolls

Our fabrics do not fray and you do not have to use a special sewing machine or overlocker to work with Jersey and knitted fabrics. To sew knitted fabrics on a normal sewing machine simply increase the length of stitch and lightly stretch the fabric as it is fed through the machine, experiment with a remnant to get the settings right. You can of course use zigzag stitches and overlockers should you prefer.

When ordering fabric we suggest that you ensure that you buy all that you need to avoid the disappointment of our having sold out or having different shades.

Most of our Poly/Cottons are 65% Polyester for durability and easy to care for, with 35% cotton for comfort.

For a complete set of swatches for all of our basic plain and seasonal fabrics use the attached Order Form and send it in with just £5.00, these should be retained for future use especially when mixing and matching with the seasonal fabrics.

Fabric Care and Tips

Laundry Room

Before cutting out we recommend pre-washing your fabric on your coolest wash cycle to allow for any shrinkage or loss of dye that may sometimes occur. Pre-washing is especially important when using colour blocking techniques for your garment and helps to prevent dye bleeding between the fabrics.

Only use a cool iron where necessary as you will find that most of our fabric do not crease, even when packed in a suitcase for travelling. Knitwit Travel Tip - After unpacking your suitcase simply hang your clothes up in the bathroom overnight and any creasing will usually drop out.

Blunt needle warning - Light weight fabrics in particular can be damaged by blunt machine needles so we recommend that you change needles often.
